Time-bounded Kolmogorov complexity
The -time-bounded Kolmogorov complexity of a string is the length of the shortest program that outputs within steps. The assumption is that every efficient algorithm fails to compute on at least an inverse-polynomial fraction of uniformly random .
Assumption
Fix a universal Turing machine . For a time bound and ,
where is the output of on the program within steps — LP20.
\begin{algorithm}
\algname{Game}
\caption{$\Game^{\mathrm{kt}}_{t,\calA}(\secpar)$}
\begin{algorithmic}
\State $x \getsr \bits^\secpar$
\State $k \gets \calA(1^\secpar, x)$
\Return $[k = K^t(x)]$
\end{algorithmic}
\end{algorithm}
For a polynomial with a constant , is mildly hard on average if there is a polynomial such that for all efficient and all sufficiently large ,
— LP20.
Known Results
- Mild average-case hardness of Kᵗ ⇔ OWF: for every polynomial , is mildly hard on average if and only if one-way functions exist — LP20.
Attacks
- Running every program of length at most on for steps decides whether in time — standard.
