Constant-bias coin flipping ⇒ OWF
Statement
If a two-party coin-flipping protocol with bias at most exists, then one-way functions exist — HO11. Any constant bias suffices, also for weak coin flipping, in which each party only prefers one outcome — BHT14.
Sketch
Without one-way functions, a party can efficiently sample a near-uniform continuation of the protocol consistent with the transcript so far. The biased-continuation attack samples such continuations at each of its rounds and keeps one that leads to its preferred outcome; this biases every protocol by about , and a refined attack by any constant below — HO11, BHT14.
Notes
- For negligible bias, the implication is part of IL89’s theorem that coin flipping requires one-way functions — IL89.
- One-way functions give coin flipping with bias in rounds, by repeating Blum’s protocol — Cle86 — so coin flipping with some constant bias below exists iff one-way functions do — BHT14.
