PCP = NP
Statement
: every has a probabilistic polynomial-time verifier that, on input and oracle access to a proof string , uses random bits, reads a constant number of bits of , accepts with probability for some when , and accepts every with probability at most when (PCP) — ALM+92. ALM+92 build on AS92, who characterize as the languages whose membership proofs a polynomial-time verifier checks using random bits and a sub-logarithmic number of queries, and who introduce the recursive composition of verifiers both papers use — AS92. The converse inclusion is standard.
Sketch
For : over all coin strings the verifier reads at most positions of , so an machine guesses those bits and runs on every coin string, accepting iff all runs accept — standard.
Notes
- Only positions of can be addressed, so the proof has length — standard. Running the verifier times with independent coins gives soundness error with queries and random bits — standard.
- The multi-prover analogue at exponential scale is MIP = NEXP — BFL90.
