LWE ⇒ Lossy TDF (Peikert–Waters)
Statement
If LWE is hard with polynomial modulus-to-noise ratio, which for prime follows from the worst-case quantum hardness of standard lattice problems to within polynomial factors — Reg05 — then lossy trapdoor functions exist, and they give the first IND-CCA2-secure encryption from worst-case lattice assumptions — PW08.
Sketch
The function index is a matrix of LWE-based encryptions of either the identity matrix (injective mode) or the zero matrix (lossy mode), and evaluation multiplies the input vector into it homomorphically. In the injective mode the trapdoor decrypts the output and recovers the input; in the lossy mode the output depends on the input only through a short linear image and small accumulated noise, so the image is small. LWE makes the two kinds of index indistinguishable — PW08.
Notes
- The construction parallels the DDH-based one: the index is an encryption of the identity or the zero matrix under an LWE-based additively homomorphic scheme — PW08.
